Charlotte Douglas International Airport Service Workers Strike Ahead Of Thanksgiving Due To Unfair Wages
Charlotte, North Carolina travelers may have a hard time this week!
Workers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport went on strike Monday, demanding higher wages during the busy Thanksgiving travel week.
The Service Employees International Union announced the 24-hour strike, aimed at ending “poverty wages” and gaining “respect on the job.” Employees from ABM and Prospect Airport Services, who perform tasks like cleaning, trash removal, and wheelchair assistance, authorized the stoppage.
While American Airlines, the main carrier at the airport, anticipated no significant disruptions, some flights experienced delays.
Workers reported struggles to afford basic necessities, earning between $12.50 and $19 an hour, and advocates, including the Rev. Glencie Rhedrick, stated they should be paid $22 to $25 an hour. Demonstrators gathered with signs promoting respect and fair wages for workers.
