Mark Zuckerberg Criticizes Media Censorship & Announces Plan To Replace Fact-Checkers w/ Community Notes On Facebook & Instagram
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is making significant changes to how it moderates content.
Earlier today (Jan. 7), CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in a video that Meta will remove third-party fact-checkers and replace them with user-driven “community notes,” a system similar to Elon Musk’s approach on X (formerly Twitter).
Zuckerberg explained that the change aims to prioritize “free expression,” though he acknowledged it could lead to an increase in harmful content. In his announcement, he sharply criticized the Biden administration’s push for stricter social media censorship to combat misinformation, stating:
“Fact-checkers have been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created. What started as a movement to be more inclusive has increasingly been used to shut down opinions and shut out people with different ideas, and it’s gone too far.”

The announcement comes amidst reports of a rightward shift in Meta’s leadership, coinciding with Donald Trump’s second presidential term. Recent moves include appointing Trump ally and UFC CEO Dana White to Meta’s board and donating $1 million to the President-elect’s inaugural fund.
Critics, including the Real Facebook Oversight Board, have condemned the changes, calling them “political pandering” and a retreat from responsible content moderation.
Under the new policies, Meta will rely on user reports for non-severe violations, while automated systems will focus solely on illegal and high-risk content. While Zuckerberg claims these adjustments address concerns about over-censorship, critics warn they may amplify misinformation and polarizing content.
