Google Will Rename ‘Gulf of Mexico’ To ‘Gulf of America’ For U.S. Users On Maps Following Directive From Trump
Google Map users in the U.S. will soon notice a change to the name of the “Gulf of Mexico,” the company recently announced.
On Monday, Jan. 27, Google shared on X that they have a,
“longstanding practice of applying name changes” on maps “when they are updated in official government sources.”
The change follows President Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf, which he argued should be called the “Gulf of America” because it “is ours” and played a “pivotal role in shaping America’s future and the global economy.”

Along with Gulf of America, Google added that U.S. users will start seeing the reverted name of Alaskan mountain, Mount McKinley. The mountain, originally named after Ohio-born President William McKinley, was changed to Mount Denali during the Obama administration to honor Alaska’s native population.
Google confirmed that these changes will apply to U.S. users only, while international users will continue to see both original names on maps.
