Suspicious Wi-Fi Hotspot Name Sparks B*mb Threat Scare, Delays American Airlines Flight
An American Airlines flight was delayed after a suspicious Wi-Fi hotspot name, “There is a bomb on the flight,” prompted authorities to investigate.
Flight 2863, scheduled from Austin, Texas, to Charlotte, North Carolina, was set to depart at 1:42 p.m. on February 7, 2025. Passenger Bruce Steen, 63, recalled seeing a young man show a flight attendant something on a tablet, leading to the pilot’s announcement of an “administrative issue” and the flight returning to the gate.
The Austin Police Department and Department of Aviation were alerted, and all passengers were eventually escorted off the plane. A police lieutenant warned that if the renaming was a joke, the situation would be handled differently.
All passengers had to show their hotspots to police, and the plane and luggage were thoroughly checked. After a security sweep, the flight was cleared, resuming at 6:15 p.m. local time, with minimal impact on operations.
