A terrifying emergency unfolded on a Japan Airlines flight.
On June 30, flight JL8696/IJ004 departed from Shanghai Pudong Airport, heading to Tokyo Narita with 191 people on board. About 10 minutes into the flight, the plane rapidly descended from around 36,000 feet to just under 10,500 feet due to a mechanical issue.

According to reports, passengers heard a muffled boom before oxygen masks dropped. A flight attendant cried and shouted for everyone to put on their masks, saying the plane had a malfunction.
One passenger shared that they were “on the verge of tears” and even wrote a farewell note including details of their insurance and bank card PINs. The pilot eventually diverted the flight to Kansai International Airport in Osaka. No injuries were reported.
Passengers were offered compensation and a night’s accommodation while authorities launched an investigation into the incident.
