Assata Shakur Has Died at 78: Black Panther & Black Liberation Army Activist Passed In Cuba
Assata Shakur — political activist, former Black Panther, and member of the Black Liberation Army — has died in Havana, Cuba at the age of 78.
Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed her passing, citing health issues and age. Shakur was convicted in 1973 of killing a New Jersey state trooper, a charge she always denied. After escaping prison in 1979, she fled to Cuba, where she lived in exile for decades.
From abroad, she remained outspoken about ending racism, sexism, capitalist exploitation, and political oppression — cementing her place as one of the most controversial and influential activists of her era.
We send our condolences to her family & friends.
