Memphis Soul Legend Don Bryant D*ad At 83 – Ann Peebles’ Husband & The Genius Behind ‘I Can’t Stand The Rain’ Leaves A Timeless Legacy
Don Bryant, the legendary Memphis soul craftsman behind some of Southern soul’s most enduring classics, has passed away at the age of 83.
His family confirmed the news Friday, December 26, sharing a heartfelt statement honoring his life and legacy.
“Don loved sharing his music and songs with all of you and it gave him such great joy to perform and record new music,” his family wrote. “He was so appreciative of everyone who was part of his musical journey and who supported him along the way.”
Bryant first emerged as a solo artist in the 1960s before pivoting into songwriting at Memphis’ iconic Hi Records.
“I wanted to be a part of it,” he once explained. “If it wasn’t gonna be the singing, I was content with trying to do the writing.”
He later penned classics for Solomon Burke, Etta James, and Otis Clay, while crafting his most famous works for wife Ann Peebles — including the Grammy-nominated “I Can’t Stand the Rain.”
“Music is one of my greatest loves,” Bryant said in 2020.
