Woman Says She Was Publicly Checked For Calling “Well-Known” Black Woman “Auntie”
A social media post is gaining traction after a woman shared an uncomfortable interaction that’s now fueling debate online.
In a thread posted by btpnyc, she claims she attended an event in Brooklyn and greeted a “well-known” Black woman she admired as “Auntie” — a term often used in Black culture as a sign of respect.
However, she says the response was immediate and unexpected.
According to the post, the woman told her she was “too grown” to be using the term and that “Auntie” is meant for children. The situation escalated when she says she was asked her age and revealed she was 42.
She alleges the woman responded that they seemed close in age and could “hang out,” later adding that the person is 59 — creating nearly a 20-year gap.
She also shared that the moment left her uncomfortable, especially since it happened in front of others, noting she chose not to engage further and instead returned to her seat.
Now, the post has sparked wider conversation online, with some defending “Auntie” as a cultural sign of respect, while others say it can carry different meanings depending on context.
