University Of Maryland Tennis Team Suspended Indefinitely After R@cist Imagery Sent To Howard University & Other Schools

The University of Maryland has indefinitely suspended its club tennis team after members allegedly distributed r@cist imagery to other universities ahead of a weekend tournament.

According to FOX 5 DC, the controversy began when promotional materials for a tennis tournament in College Park included imagery associated with the K* Kl•x Kl@n (KKK). The materials were reportedly shared through a Google document emailed to participating schools, including Howard University, a historically Black university in Washington, D.C.

Howard University’s tennis club condemned the imagery and demanded accountability. In a statement, the team said that despite Maryland’s suspension and apology, “true accountability has yet to come.” The club is calling for a formal investigation, a public apology, sensitivity training and a donation to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

University officials said they were horrified by the incident and apologized for the harm caused. Although only a few students may have been directly involved, the entire club tennis team was suspended and forced to forfeit its tournament matches. The matter has also been referred to campus police and the university’s Office of Student Conduct.

The University of Maryland’s Black Student Union also responded, acknowledging the school’s swift action while emphasizing that disciplinary measures alone cannot erase the emotional impact on Black students. The organization called for lasting accountability and meaningful efforts to address the harm caused.

The investigation remains ongoing.
