Here For It? Mayor Zohran Mamdani Announces Plans To End NYC’s Horse-Drawn Carriage Industry, Vows To Protect Workers & Horses

#NewYorkCity’s iconic horse-drawn carriages could soon become a thing of the past! ??

NYC Mayor #ZohranMamdani has announced plans to bring the city’s longtime horse-drawn carriage industry to an end after reaching an agreement with City Council Speaker Julie Menin. “The horse carriage industry is coming to an end in New York City,” Mamdani declared on social media, promising that his administration would protect workers, owners, and the horses. According to reports, the City Council is expected to vote on the proposed legislation, known as “Romanch’s Law,” on October 22. If approved, the ban would take effect June 1, 2028, ending a tourist tradition that has been part of the city for more than 160 years.

The proposed ban follows years of animal welfare and public safety concerns, including the June de@th of 18-year-old tourist Romanch Mahajan, who was fatally injured in a #CentralPark carriage accident. The legislation would require the city to help carriage drivers transition into new jobs while ensuring the horses are humanely retired.
