Anne Hathaway Calls Out White Privilege, Dedicates Post to Nia Wilson: Black People Fear For Their Lives Daily

Anne Hathaway is addressing white privilege in America. The actress used her Instagram platform to talk about the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old aspiring lawyer, Nia Wilson. Hathaway shared the image heavily circulated image of Wilson, attaching a lengthy caption to speak extensively about her empathetic viewpoint of being black in America. She begins,

The murder of Nia Wilson- may she rest in the power and peace she was denied here- is unspeakable AND MUST NOT be met with silence. She is not a hash tag; she was a black woman and she was murdered in cold blood by a white man.

She continues by addressing how she feels white people could be allies to minority communities, insisting on how white people should become more insightful and open to hearing about the black people’s experience in America,

White people- including me, including you- must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS.

She also brought attention to the notion that white people often times misunderstand the social misbalance in America,

White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves- how “decent” are we really? Not in our intent, but in our actions? In our lack of action? Peace and prayers and JUSTICE for Nia and the Wilson family xx

As previously reported, Wilson was stabbed in the neck in Oakland, California last Sunday evening. Wilson and her sisters were traveling back home from a family function, awaiting to board their next train at the MacArthur Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, when the women were approached by a white man with a knife; that man is, John Lee Cowell. Cowell, 27, stabbed Wilson and her sister, Letifah Wilson, 26. As Nia passed away at the scene, Letifah suffered an injury to the neck, where Cowell missed a major artery.

Cowell has been captured and booked on assault with a deadly weapon, violating parole, and first degree murder. Cowell was previously released from jail a few months ago and reportedly, has a lengthy criminal history, as well.
