Malcolm D. Lee In Talks To Produce THIRD ‘Best Man’ Film + Director Takes Shots At Tyler Perrys Film Making Skills
Obviously, it’s pretty early on, so there’s no word yet on locking in the ensemble cast. As you’re aware, it took 14 years for Lee to come back with a sequel, but reportedly, this one is going to happen much more quickly. What are your thoughts on a part three to this romantic comedy?
And in totally non-related news…
Did anyone catch this semi-vintage interview of Lee (who is cousin’s with director Spike Lee) criticizing Tyler Perry. In an interview with BET, he criticized film maker Tyler Perry, saying he has “no regrets” about saying the Atlanta-based filmmaker is more interested in commerce than art. He elaborated,
His focus has really been about getting a lot of product out there. God bless him. That’s how he chooses to [express himself].
He continued:
It’s not as terrible as people say it is, but it’s not as good as the box office numbers are. Just because something makes money doesn’t mean it’s good, it’s just popular, it taps into something people respond to. I don’t do what he does. He’s not interested in art, he’s interested in turning out a product. There is value in that, building up a studio and being independent. I wish he would get better as the movies go on. Maybe he will, I don’t know, but I don’t think that is his focus right now.
No comment as of yet from Mr. Perry.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a third installment considering how this movie ended!
P.S. “urban romantic comedy” & “urban-themed”…sigh…Hopefully one day films with an all black cast won’t be labeled as such.
Preach Brother Lee!!! I have been thinking the SAME thing! I feel like Tyler’s movies have been going down hill since Daddy’s Little Girls. With a Tyler Perry movie I expect the following: him in drag (Madea), romanticized stereotypes of African Americans, a few Christian values swirled in with a cheesy plot! I want MORE than that! Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a case of “crabs in a barrel”. Tyler has made monumental success and I wish him more. I just want more from him creatively…
