Former DC Mayor Marion Barry Dies At 78
Barry, pegged as ‘Mayor for Life‘, had both high and low moments in Washington, DC.
The Mississippi-born civil rights activist served three terms as mayor of the District of Columbia. While he was well known for his contributions to the nation’s capital, he was also known for surviving a drug arrest and jail sentence, and redeeming himself by wining a fourth term as the city’s chief executive.
One of the final tweets from Barry was an announcement, promoting his upcoming appearance on Oprah, which airs this evening:
Barry leaves behind three children — Marion Christopher Barry, Tamara Masters Wilds (stepdaughter) and Lalanya Masters Abner (stepdaughter). Funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
