Tyler Perry to Host Aretha Franklin Tribute Special – Jennifer Hudson, SZA, Janelle Monae to Perform
An 18-time Grammy award-winner certainly deserves a Grammy tribute special. Late singer Aretha Franklin is set to receive a grand tribute concert from the music industry, organized by the Recording Academy and iconic music executive Clive Davis. The special, aptly titled, “Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul,” is set to tape on January 13, 2019 at the Shrine Auditorium. The special will air on CBS. CBS’ Executive Vice President of Specials, Music, and Live Events – Jack Sussman – issued this statement on Aretha’s upcoming special:
“This special will celebrate Aretha Franklin’s numerous accomplishments as an entertainment icon, singer, songwriter, pianist, actress and civil rights activist. Aretha had an incredible effect on humanity and music with her indomitable spirit and grace. We look forward to honoring this music legend with numerous performers who all admire and respect the Queen of Soul.”
Clive Davis echoed those sentiments in his personal statement:
“Aretha was more than the Queen of Soul; she was a national treasure. This unique concert — featuring many of today’s greatest artists — will celebrate Aretha in a spectacular manner befitting her once-in-a-lifetime talent.”
Filmmaker of “Madea” fame, Tyler Perry, is set to host the star-studded CBS special. Tyler was also a longtime friend of the Queen of Soul, and spoke at her memorial service this past August.
A full range of the music industry’s shining stars will blaze the stage in Aretha Franklin’s honor. The list of performers include: Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monae, John Legend, Patti Labelle, Celine Dion, BeBe Winans, SZA, Yolanda Adams, H.E.R., and Jennifer Hudson.
Jennifer has also confirmed her starring role in the long awaited Aretha Franklin biopic, calling it her “dream role.”
