Viola Davis To Play Michelle Obama In New Series ‘First Ladies’, Will Also Co-Executive Produce
Viola Davis is trading in Annalise Keating for Michelle Obama!
The “How To Get Away With Murder” star signed on to play former FLOTUS on Showtime’s new drama “First Ladies”, according to Variety.
Each season of the hour-long series will feature a behind-the-scenes look at the experiences of women who have held the title of First Lady of the U.S. The debut season will tell the stories of Michelle Obama, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Betty Ford.
Viola Davis will double as executive producer with Julius Tennon under their JuVee Productions.
Showtime’s president of entertainment, Jana Winograde, previously said of the show,
“Throughout our history, presidents’ spouses have wielded remarkable influence, not only on the nation’s leaders but on the country itself. ’First Ladies’ fits perfectly within the Showtime wheelhouse of drama and politics, revealing how much personal relationships impact both domestic and global events. Having Viola Davis play Michelle Obama is a dream come true, and we couldn’t be luckier to have her extraordinary talent to help launch this series.”
The series comes just in time as “How To Get Away With Murder” wraps its sixth and final season on ABC on May 14.
Viola Davis also stars on Amazon Prime’s Troop Zero.
A portion of Michelle Obama’s story was previously told in 2016’s Southside With You as fans got a look at the earlier days of her romance with President Barack Obama.
Now, it looks like we’ll see another side.
