Kelly Rowland On Being In Beyonce’s Shadow ‘For A Whole Decade’: I Would Torture Myself In My Head!
Kelly Rowland has come into her own since the final days of Destiny’s Child. But now, she’s speaking on how she lived in her groupmate and best friend Beyonce’s shadows for 10 years during their days in the Grammy-Award winning group.
In a recent episode of “The Voice Australia,” Kelly Rowland relates to her Team Kelly contestant, Chris Sebastian, on what it feels like to stand in the professional shadow of someone you love. Chris’ older brother – 2003 Australian Idol winner, Guy Sebastian – serves as Kelly’s co-judge on the singing competition show. Kelly assured Chris that she can relate.
After Destiny’s Child went on hiatus in 2002, and for a second time in 2005 – Kelly Rowland said she “tortured herself” trying to forge an identity outside of Queen Bey. She told Chris Sebastian:
“I know this feeling. Can you imagine what it’s like being in a group with Beyoncé?…I would be lying if I said ‘No, it’s never bothered me.’ That’s bull. There was a whole decade, if I am being completely honest, a decade where it was like the elephant in the room. It was the thing that would constantly be on my shoulder.”
She continued:
“I would just torture myself in my head. Like, I can’t wear this dress because they’re going to say it’s like B. Or, I can’t have a song like that because it sounds too much like B. They’re gonna compare anyways.”
This isn’t Kelly Rowland’s first time mentioning her longtime friend, Beyonce, on “The Voice Australia.” Last year, Kelly told a hilarious story about crashing a fan’s karaoke session with her iconic bestie.
