Tom Hanks’ Son Chet Hanks Accused Of Using “Verbal Blackface” As He Defends His Controversial Caribbean Accent (Listen)

Tom Hanks’ son Chet Hanks is currently trending after he answered questions about his Caribbean accent that he often uses in public, recently on social app Clubhouse. Chet Hanks debuted the new accent during his red carpet appearance at the Golden Globes Awards Sunday (Jan. 5). Check it out below:


Although Chet Hanks who goes by his rap name Chet Haze, has been accused of cultural appropriation he’s continued to use the accent raising eyebrows with fans.

Chet hopped on Clubhouse, an audio app that allows it’s users to enter and listen to different conversations, called “rooms” and a clip from the room made it’s way online. In the clip, you will hear Chet being grilled by on why he uses the accent.  He says,

“Guys, it’s really as simple as this, If I get on a binge and I watch a bunch of English gangster movies, and I go around, ordering a coffee at Starbucks and I’m with my friend and I go, ‘Give me a latte, guvna.’ I’m not s***ing on English people.”

One user in the conversation, stressed to Chet Hanks that he can’t compare being a White man using an English accent to being a White man using a Caribbean accent.  Adding that unliked Caribbean people, English people have not faced oppression like Jamaicans.   Another user in he chatroom accused him of using

“verbal blackface”.

Although there was is no clip showing if Chet ever realized that him using the accent was inappropriate or not, his name has been trending ever since the chat ended.

It’s not clear what made Chet start to use the accent but, but earlier this year Chet Hanks defended all of the attention he’s received. He shared the video and wrote the caption,
