Nina Simone’s Business Associate Claims Kamala Harris Honored The Late Singer’s Final Wishes, Despite Family’s Allegations

Are Nina Simone‘s family’s grievances against Kamala Harris misguided?

This past Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19th), Nina Simone‘s granddaughter blasted Kamala Harris for allegedly leaving the estate “in SHAMBLES” and having the family “walk away with NOTHING.” She also claimed that, as a result of this, Nina Simone‘s relatives were living paycheck to paycheck, with her granddaughter saying she had to consider stripping to get by. Later, Lisa Simone Kelly—Nina Simone’s daughter and RéAnna Simone Kelly‘s mother–made a video that supported the above tweets. Lisa Simone Kelly claimed:

“Today, my daughter came out blazing on Twitter. She made some comments that have started a fire–such is the Nina Simone legacy. I support her 1,000%, support everything she’s saying. She’s speaking her truth, she’s speaking the truth of our family.”

However, according to TMZ, Nina Simone‘s will tells a different story. Apparently, Nina left the majority of her estate to a charity that provides musical education to Black African kids in Ghana, Liberia, and South Africa. Additionally, South African singer Miriam Makeba was listed as the trustee on the will. However, if Miriam Makeba was unable to complete her trustee duties, she was able to appoint another to carry on Nina‘s wishes.

Upon Nina Simone‘s 2013 death, Lisa Simone Kelly was ultimately put in charge. However, 10 years later, she was accused of not properly carrying out her mother’s wishes regarding her funds going to the charity. As a result, Kamala Harris stepped in to allegedly help properly carry out Nina Simone‘s wishes by having Lisa relinquish her rights to the estate.

So, essentially, Nina Simone‘s business associate claims Kamala Harris was only trying to honor Nina Simone‘s final wishes–not trying to sabotage the family. Additionally, Nina Simone‘s will allegedly corroborates this story.
