Pharrell Williams/The Neptunes Named Best Hip-Hop Producers Of The 21st Century
The Neptunes–comprised of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo–are receiving their hard-earned flowers!
Yesterday (Wednesday, July 21st), Billboard unveiled its staff’s picks for the 50 greatest music producers of the 21st century. While pop producer Max Martin was listed as number 1, the magazine staff listed “Pharrell/The Neptunes” as number 2. Resultingly, the Virginia Beach-based duo, formed in 1990, has been named the top producers in the hip-hop genre!
When describing their defining works, the publication wrote:
“Take your pick between Nelly’s ‘Hot in Herre’ and The Clipse’s ‘Grindin’,’ two unassailable 2002 classics that showed off Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo’s staggering simultaneous aptitude for pop-conquering maximalism and streets-locking minimalism, respectively.”
On top of these hits, The Neptunes also produced “Money Maker” by Ludacris, “Hollaback Girl” by Gwen Stefani, and “Drop It Like It’s Hot” by Snoop Dogg. Resultingly, they’ve become iconic for these various hits throughout the 2000s.
However, the duo has also been busy at work recently as well! The Neptunes produced three songs on Pop Smoke‘s posthumous Faith album: “Top Shotta,” “Spoiled,” and “Merci Beaucoup.”
Additionally, the duo produced “Wasting Time” by Brent Faiyaz, “Keto” by IDK, and two Moneybagg Yo songs–“Projects” and “Certified Neptunes.” Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo show no signs of slowing down anytime soon!
