Alexandra Burke Alleges She Was Asked To Bleach Her Skin After Winning ‘The X Factor’ + Was Told She Looked ‘Aggressive’ Because Of Baby Hairs
Alexandra Burke is opening up about the colorism she faced after winning The X Factor.
Earlier today (Monday, August 9th), The Guardian published its recent interview with Alexandra Burke. Alexandra Burke is known for winning the fifth season of The X Factor back in 2008. A year later, she made her commercial debut with her Overcome album, which was led by her rendition of “Hallelujah.”
However, Alexandra Burke has opened up about some of the negatives that followed her time on The X Factor. During her interview, the singer addressed the blatant colorism she experienced, such as being asked to bleach her skin. While she said she was told about the anti-Blackness within the music industry various times, Alexandra Burke states:
“It only really hit me when I got asked to bleach my skin after X Factor [by] a certain person on the creative side who was working with me.”
Alexandra Burke first made this revelation in a video back in 2020. In her Instagram video, she alleged:
“I got told to bleach my skin, and that was something I refused to do. Because it’s just so absurd to me that somebody could even remotely say to someone, ‘Bleach your skin, so that you could look whiter.’ Still to this moment, it breaks my heart that I was told that.”

Additionally, Alexandra Burke spoke on the microaggressions she faced in the industry during her interview, including being called “aggressive” for laying her baby hairs for a performance. She revealed:
“It was a beautiful show in honor of Sir Bruce Forsyth and I had my hair in a bun, with a couple of baby hairs. It was classic, classy; I had a black dress on. Half an hour before I was due on stage, my hair stylist came up to me and said: ‘I’ve just been told you look quite aggressive with this hairstyle. We need to change it.’ I said: ‘What?’ He said: ‘Your record label’s just told me you look aggressive, so we have to change it.’ I said: ‘What part of me looks aggressive?’ He said it was the baby hairs stuck to my head.”
