Aaliyah’s Uncle Claims Singer’s Mother Was Aware Of R. Kelly’s Alleged Relationship W/ Her When She Was A Minor: My Sister Knew A Lot More Than What We Thought She Knew

Aaliyah’s uncle Barry Hankerson is sharing his truth regarding his niece’s relationship with R&B singer R. Kelly. As you may already know, R. Kelly infamously married Aaliyah in 1994 when she was only 15 years old and he was 27. Allegedly, R. Kelly had the then-minor singer’s age altered to state she was 18 on the marriage certificate. Aaliyah’s parents reportedly had the illegal marriage annulled in February 1995.

During a recent TV appearance, Barry Hankerson hinted that Aaliyah’s mother, Diane Haughton, was fully aware of R. Kelly’s illegal relationship with her daughter and the alleged abuse he put her through. When asked if he knew about the ‘issues going on with R. Kelly when they were going on’ he replied,

“No. No, didn’t have a clue. Completely ignorant to it.”

Barry Hankerson was then asked if he thinks anyone in his family was aware of what was happening between the ‘One In A Million’ singer and R. Kelly and he shared that he believes his sister (Aaliyah’s mom) knew about their relationship.

“Yes, I think my sister knew a lot more than what we thought she knew.”

As previously reported, R. Kelly’s long-awaited trial started last month on Aug. 18th. According to reports, the ‘Ignition’ singer is facing multiple charges including one count of racketeering with 14 underlying acts, kidnapping, forced labor, and sex trafficking. In addition to that, he’s also facing eight counts of violating the Mann Act, which prohibits sex trafficking across state lines.

R. Kelly

Earlier this month the minister who married Aaliyah and R. Kelly in 1994 spoke about the nuptials for the first time after he was subpoenaed to testify during R. Kelly’s trial. During his testimony, he claimed he didn’t recognize the famous singers and the ceremony only lasted

“about 10 minutes or less.”

He added that R. Kelly attempted to get him to sign a non-disclosure agreement but he refused.

“I looked at it, I read it, then I kind of chuckled and said it wasn’t worth the paper it was written on.”

He also claimed that he turned down the money R. Kelly offered him to never speak about the wedding. The minister added that he promised he wouldn’t tell anyone about what took place that day.
