Dave Chappelle fans can now get a glimpse of what to expect in his upcoming comedy special!
Netflix unveiled a teaser for Dave Chappelle‘s upcoming comedy special, The Closer earlier today (Wednesday, Sept. 29th). At the very start of the brief trailer, viewers can hear Dave Chappelle say:
“Comedians have a responsibility to speak recklessly. Sometimes the funniest thing to say is mean. I’m not saying it to be mean–I’m saying it to be funny.”

This is Dave Chappelle‘s sixth Netflix special, which he refers to as “the sixth chapter.” The 48-year-old comedian kicked off his first Netflix comedy special, The Age of Spin, back in 2017. That same year, Chappelle went on to release three more comedy specials on Netflix: Deep in the Heart of Texas, Equanimity, and The Bird Revelations. He also released Sticks & Stones in 2019, which–while dubbed as offensive by some critics–went on to win Best Comedy Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards.
In addition to the aforementioned Netflix specials, it’s also worth noting that Dave Chappelle released a stand-up special inspired by George Floyd in 2020. The YouTube special, titled 8:46, was inspired by the injustices of police brutality and racism. The film’s title comes from the length of time Derek Chauvin spent kneeling on George Floyd‘s neck.
The Closer will be available for streaming on Netflix starting Tuesday, Oct. 5th.
