La La Anthony Reveals A Heart Condition Sent Her To The Emergency Room: My Heart Was Beating 30,000 Extra Beats More Than The Average Person
La La Anthony is opening up about her health. In a new interview, the 39-year-old actress reveals the heart condition that landed her in the emergency room and the importance of listening to your body.

La La Anthony was diagnosed with premature ventricular contractions or PVC, which are extra heartbeats that cause the heart to overwork, in 2019. On her condition, Anthony said,
“I felt my heart racing all the time, but because it’s all I ever really knew, I didn’t even know that it was necessarily something wrong. I just thought, ‘Oh, you just feel your heart racing sometimes because you’re working too much, you haven’t slept, you’re stressed.’ You know, we, especially Black people, like to self-diagnose. We got all the answers.”
After her diagnosis, Anthony says the doctors were ‘very concerned’ for her. She added,
“Within a 24-hour period, they said, my heart was beating 30,000 extra beats more than the average person. It was going fast constantly. Your heart is a muscle. If a muscle is working so hard all the time, eventually the muscle will get weak and cause heart attack, stroke, death, whatever it is.”

The former MTV VJ was prescribed medicine to help regulate her heart but couldn’t handle the side affects. She was later encouraged to get surgery but kept putting it off due to a fear of needles. However, the surgery became unavoidable when she was so lightheaded she was unable to stand on her own. She continued,
“I never felt anything like that before. Kiyan was like, ‘Mom, please let them call because you don’t look like yourself.'”

After reaching the hospital, La La Anthony was rushed into surgery, where doctors performed a cardiac ablation to remove the part of her heart that was causing the irregular beating. Recalling the surgery, Anthony shared,
“They would wake me up during the procedure and say, ‘We’re going to speed your heart up now…. Just take deep breaths. Those doctors were just so incredible. But it was a terrifying experience.”
The Power star says she was hesitant to share her story but was encouraged by her 14-year-old son, Kiyan to come forward. She added,
“Life is short. We’ve learned that from the pandemic. We learned that from being in quarantine. You want to be able to live it to the fullest, and you don’t want something that can easily be corrected to be a reason why you’re not able to enjoy life or be there for your family or your friends. Use me as an example of why not to wait.”
