Aretha Franklin Would Be Upset About Jennifer Hudson Not Being Nominated For An Oscar For ‘Respect’, Says Her Family
Aretha Franklin’s family is disappointed about Respect not being acknowledged at The Oscars.
Soul icon Aretha Franklin’s family is disappointed about Respect not receiving an Oscar nomination. They’re even more upset that Jennifer Hudson–who portrayed the “Queen of Soul” in the biopic–won’t be recognized for her outstanding performance.
According to TMZ, Aretha’s niece, Sabrina Owens, felt that her famous aunt would be proud of Jennifer’s portrayal. She also stated that Aretha would’ve wanted Jennifer, whom she hand-picked for the role, to snag an Oscar. Prior to her death in 2018, Aretha was an integral part of the production.
Aretha’s first cousin and former backup singer Brenda Franklin Corbit shared the same sentiments. The media outlet claimed that Brenda was “heartbroken” about the Academy’s choice. She, too, felt like Jennifer’s performance was worthy of an Oscar and that her cousin wouldn’t be happy. In fact, while Aretha was alive, she was aiming to win the prestigious award.
Brenda went on to say that the Franklin family considers Jennifer one of their own.
Jennifer previously shared with a media outlet that Aretha told her she’d win an Oscar for Respect. At the time, she said:
“The very first thing Aretha said to me when we sat down was, ‘You’re going to win an Oscar for playing me, right?'”
Aretha Franklin chose Jennifer Hudson after she saw her in 2006’s Dreamgirls. Jennifer took home “Best Supporting Actress” at The Oscars for her role as Effie White.
