Lizzo Opens Up About Failed ‘Little Mermaid’ Audition: ‘I Was Down to Make Ursula a THOT’
It looks like Lizzo (real name Melissa Viviane Jefferson) is getting candid about her failed audition for the highly anticipated Disney live-action remake of The Little Mermaid! During a recent interview, the 33-year-old singer spoke about the missed opportunity and what she planned on doing with the infamous role of Ursula if she landed the job.
“Everyone knows I auditioned for Ursula in The Little Mermaid, and I didn’t get it. But you know, I’m fine as hell. That has nothing to do with Ursula, but I was down to make Ursula a THOT, shaking a**.”
The Grammy Award winning singer had such a big interest in the role, she even even dressed up as the Disney villain and sang a version of the song “Poor Unfortunate Souls” on social media.

Actress Melissa McCarthy ended up winning the role of Ursula and oddly enough, the two women ran into each other at the taping of Adele’s One Night Only CBS special in November and bonded over their Ursula history. Lizzo detailed the interaction and said,
“She was like, ‘Hi, I’m Melissa.’And I was like, ‘Hi, I’m Melissa. And I also auditioned for Ursula.’ And she [Melissa] was like, ‘Well, why the hell did I get the part?,’ which is a classic Melissa McCarthy thing to say. And then I was like, ‘Girl, because my audition was terrible.’ And I say that as Tyler Perry walks by. And I was like — ruined my chances there.”
Lizzo continued,
“And then she goes, ‘This is my daughter Vivian.’ And I’m like, ‘Get out of here, because my name is Melissa Viviane.’ We were looking at each other like, ‘What the hell is going on?'”
The ‘Truth Hurts’ singer clarified that she was only joking when she said her audition was ‘terrible’.
“My audition wasn’t terrible. Sometimes I like to make jokes. My audition was good. You can ask Disney. I don’t want to talk too much about it. The singing was great. I’ll just say that.”
The Little Mermaid will be the latest entry in Disney’s list of remakes and will star Halle Bailey in the title role, with a supporting cast including Javier Bardem, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs and Melissa McCarthy.
While Lizzo did not land the role of Ursula, she does have a number of other projects on the horizon including her Amazon Prime Reality series, Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, and a new album.
