It looks like more details are surfacing surrounding the bank robbery mishap with Ryan Coogler.
Bodycam footage of Ryan Coogler has surfaced, revealing how the director reacted to being mistaken for a bank robber at a Bank of America in Atlanta back in January. The video first shows police officers approach the “Black Panther” director while he was still at the bank teller counter. We then see one of the officers pull out their gun before arresting Ryan Coogler. We can see the 35-year-old director appear shocked and confused as he said,
“Whoa, whoa, what’s going on?”
While confused, Coogler quickly cooperated with police, telling the officers,
“Hands behind my back — you got it.”
He then asks,
“Is there any reason y’all are doing this, bro?”

Ryan Coogler was then taken outside of the bank and placed in the back of a police car, while still handcuffed. Reportedly, when officers finally tell him he was arrested because of a note he had passed to the teller, Coogler explains that he has a medical assistant who prefers to be paid in cash, and since he has to withdraw a large sum of money to pay them, he does not “feel safe” asking for it verbally in front of other bank staff and customers and prefers to be discreet.
According to sources, the note read,
“I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet.”
Coogler was eventually released, and demanded to get everyone’s names to hold them accountable for the mishap.
“I need to find out who made that call in there.”

The bank tellers 911 call has also surfaced, highlighting even more negligence. According to the recording, the teller admits that Ryan Coogler indeed showed Identification, however, the teller did not look at his name on his ID. When the 911 operator asked if Ryan was a customer or someone potentially trying to rob the bank, the bank teller replied,
“They had a debit card and he inserted it, he gave me a California ID but I was like ‘how do you want the cash back?’, and he said, ‘just look at the note….Everytime I asked a question, he said, ‘look at the note.'”
The 911 operator seemed optimistic that Coogler was just a customer trying to be discreet.
“So none of his information was even verified..He might just want to be discreet, but I have police in route.”

As previously reported, Ryan Coogler spoke out on the terrible incident citing,
“This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on.”
A Bank of America spokesperson issued a public apology to the filmmaker,
“We deeply regret that this incident occurred..It never should have happened and we have apologized to Mr. Coogler.”
