Will Smith Was Already On Edge Prior To Slapping Chris Rock, Actor Headed To Therapy ‘To Resolve Issues From His Youth,’ According To Insider

New details have surfaced surrounding Will Smith and Chris Rock’s now-viral Oscars altercation.

As you may already know, Will Smith, 53, made headlines after he slapped Chris Rock, 57, at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday night (Mar. 27). The unexpected slap occurred after Chris Rock made a controversial joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, 50, having no hair. Jada Pinkett Smith has previously been vocal about how living with alopecia has affected her life.

Will Smith has since issued an apology for his actions and it seems like he’s now headed to therapy to work on his internal self. According to reports, a source close to Mark Manson, the co-author of Will’s self-titled memoir, said the actor was ‘deeply triggered’ by Rock’s joke about his wife and the comedian’s remarks took him back to his traumatic childhood. The insider shared that Will is,

“happy to have some more therapy for his unresolved childhood issues and will do what he can to make good on his momentary lapse in judgment.”

They continued,

“Essentially, though, Will was deeply triggered by Chris’ demeaning comments about his wife’s alopecia. He was taken straight back to childhood, seeing his mum getting abused by his dad.”

They added,

“This time he didn’t take it sitting down and retaliated as, unfortunately, 50 million people across the globe all saw.”

In addition to that, reports claim Will was already on edge prior to his infamous slap moment and Chris’ joke was the last straw for the Academy-Award-winning actor. As previously reported, in 2020 Will and Jada Pinkett Smith revealed that things between them haven’t always been perfect, and at one point during their marriage, Jada had an “entanglement” with R&B singer August Alsina, 29. Since then the couple has seemingly been at the center of a lot of jokes and jabs.

During this year’s British Academy Film Awards, which occurred earlier this month, host Rebel Wilson joked that Will’s,

“best performance in the past year was being OK with all his wife’s boyfriends.”

Last month, while chatting with Will and Jada on the red carpet at the SAG Awards, Laverne Cox jokingly told the couple,

“We can’t wait for … more ‘entanglements.’”

Despite the jokes that surround the famous couple’s marriage, a source close to the pair alleged that they’re unmoved by what people have to say about them. They added that the issue with Chris is more of a personal problem.

They said,

“This was personal. If someone else would’ve said it, it probably wouldn’t have mattered as much, but this was totally personal stemming from 2016 — and maybe before that.”

In 2016 Chris took shots at Will and Jada for boycotting the Oscars that year. He said,

“Jada said she’s not coming. I was like, ‘Isn’t she on a TV show?’ Jada’s gonna boycott the Oscars? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!”

“The Breakfast Club” host Angela Yee, who August Alsina first addressed his Jada relationship with, recently spoke on Will’s Oscars antics and said,

“There’s no way that after all the things that have been said, all the jokes made, all the memes, everything — and this joke is the one thing that bothers you?”

She continued,

“I don’t know if it’s just directly at Chris Rock or just directed at everybody. But it just feels like it was a whole entire buildup of all those things and he was just frustrated.”

She added,

“I think part of the issue is with putting a lot of your business out there … it leaves you open for people to make comments and make jokes about any and everything because … the more you know, the more you can weaponize things against somebody.”
