Kyla Pratt Says ‘I Knew It Was Something That I Had To Work On’ While Speaking On Being Triggered By Fans Only Acknowledging Her Work As A Child Actress + Shares Excitement For ‘The Proud Family’ Reboot
Kyla Pratt is opening up about the internal struggle she’s faced transitioning from a child star to an adult actress.
During a recent interview with Jemele Hill, 46, Kyla Pratt, 35, explained that she was often triggered by fans only referencing her work as a child actress instead of acknowledging her current work and accomplishments. She said:
“I think it was something that I was internalizing – I know that people would say things that they didn’t realize was triggering. The worst thing was always, ‘Oh my gosh, you used to be an actress. What are you doing now?’ and I’m like, ‘ I just did a tv show, y’all didn’t see it? You wanna check it out?'”
She continued,
“When you’re in your feelings about certain things and certain comments come your way–you know– but I’m one of those people, I try to recognize why I’m being triggered or what it is that someone’s doing that’s making me feel some type of way in order for me to work on it. So I knew it wasn’t coming from a malicious place from them, so I knew it was something that I had to work on.”

Kyla Pratt went on to discuss ‘The Proud Family’ reboot, in which she has returned to her iconic role as Penny Proud! Pratt shared that she was excited when she was first approached about doing a reboot. She explained:
“I said there is no way that y’all can do this without me. What do you mean am I interested in being apart of it? Like If I wasn’t interested you were gonna try and do this with someone else?..”
She continued,
“I was genuinely–I was ridiculously excited because I feel like back in the day, Disney Channel didn’t keep shows on for over a certain amount of time. So I feel like our show was needed and we had more in us, and it just didn’t happen…So when they called about the reboot, I was like absolutely.”

‘The Proud Family’ was not only the first original animated show on the channel but one of the few all-ages animation programs on television at the time centered around a Black family. The show followed 14-year-old Penny Proud and her chaotic, but loving family. The series ran for five years– premiering in 2001 and ended in 2005 with a TV movie. The hit animated series included the voices of several actors such as; Kyla Pratt, Tommy Davidson, Paula Jai Parker, Jo Marie Payton, and Orlando Brown.
Along with her iconic role in The Proud Family, Kyla Pratt is also known for her roles in several movies and tv shows such as: “Dr. Dolittle,” “One on One,” “Love & Basketball,” “Fat Albert,” and “The Baby-Sitters Club.” More recently, Pratt has been featured in various Tv series/movies such as “Call Me Kat,” “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” and “Duncanville.”
