“This is a really important Red Table Talk on alopecia. Considering what I’ve been through with my own health and what happened at the Oscars, thousands have reached out to me with their stories. I’m using this moment to give our alopecia family an opportunity to talk about what it’s like to have this condition and to inform people about what alopecia actually is.”
“Now about Oscar night, my deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out and reconcile. The state of the world today, we need them both. And we all actually need one another more than ever. Until then, Will and I are continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years, and that’s keep figuring out this thing called life together. As previously reported, viewers nationwide were shocked at this year’s Oscars ceremony when Will Smith went on stage and hit comedian Chris Rock in the face. The slap came after Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s, bald head, which is caused by her alopecia condition. Shortly after the incident, the Academy released a statement saying an official review of the incident would be held to “explore further action and consequences”.

While accepting his first ever Oscar award for his performance in “King Richard”, Will Smith tearfully apologized to the Academy for his actions. Later that evening, he released a second apology to Chris Rock via his Instagram page. Although Will Smith issued a public apology and resigned from the academy, a decision was made to ban the Academy-Award-winning actor from attending any Oscar award ceremonies for the next 10 years after hitting comedian Chris Rock.
During Wednesday’s Red Table Talk episode, Jada Pinkett Smith, along with her daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield Norris, discussed the importance of highlighting the alopecia community and give an opportunity for them to tell their story.
During the episode, they sat down with the mother of 12-year-old Rio Allred, who suffered from alopecia and sadly died by suicide after being bullied. While emotionally sharing her daughter’s story, Niki Ball revealed how nearly two weeks after her daughter’s death, the Oscars incident happened. She said,
“People are going to be Googling, ‘what is alopecia?’ Like, ‘what is this that we’ve never heard of?’ It’s not a joke.”
This has been a sensitive topic for the “Girls Trip” actress who has been vocal about her own struggles with the autoimmune disease, alopecia.
