YouTube Will Remove Videos Spreading Abortion Misinformation
YouTube is cracking down on content relating to abortion.
The online video-sharing company recently announced that it will be removing videos that contain misinformation about abortion. In a statement YouTube shared, starting Thursday (July 21),
“we will remove content that provides instructions for unsafe abortion methods or promotes false claims about abortion safety under our medical misinformation policies.”

The social media platform continued,
“Like all of our policies on health/medical topics, we rely on published guidance from health authorities. We prioritize connecting people to content from authoritative sources on health topics, and we continuously review our policies & products as real world events unfold.”

In addition to that, YouTube also said it is launching an information panel that will give its audience “context and information” from health authorities. This new feature will appear below abortion-related videos and above relevant search results.

YouTube banning videos that contain misinformation about abortion should come as no surprise. According to YouTube’s existing guidelines, the media giant already prohibits content that promotes,
“harmful substances, treatments or substances” as well as content “contradicting expert consensus on certain safe medical practices.”
As you may already know, YouTube’s latest announcement comes after the Supreme Court recently overturned Roe v. Wade, which eliminated the constitutional right to abortion after nearly 50 years.
