Actor David Mann Admits That Secret Battle w/ Depression Nearly Killed Him: I Prayed & When I Got Up I Would Still Feel Miserable

David Mann reveals how he made the world smile while suffering in silence.

On Tuesday’s (Oct. 12) episode of  The Tamron Hall Show, actor/comedian David Mann opened up about his secret battle with depression over the past two years. This was the first time the comedian publicly spoke about his mental health struggle, which was emotional.

While sitting next to his wife of 30 years, Tamela Mann, the 56-year-old said,

“One day I realized I don’t feel right, and something is off. The only way I could find relief is I would go int to my office and go to sleep. That was the only time I could feel good.”

This was shocking news considering the funnyman’s ability to make others laugh through his comedy, movies, and sitcoms. However, the “It’s a Mann’s World” star hid his depression behind a smile and by putting the needs of others first. He said he considered himself a fixer which led to him avoiding his own self-care.

David Mann said,

“They would ask me are you okay. I’ll say, ‘yeah I’m good.’ I’m a fixer. Alright, let me fix it. I’ll fix everything. Everything is good. Everything is fine. As long as everybody else is good, I’ll figure it out on my own later. That was literally killing me.”

He later became choked up as he revealed how it almost killed him,

“It was like I was drowning. The only way people were going to realize I was drowning was if I completely drowned.”

David said that the stigma around mental health and shame kept him from speaking out and seeking professional help. The faith-based comedian also admitted that prayer alone was not the answer for him.

“I prayed and I prayed and when I got up I would still feel miserable.”

The ‘Meet the Browns’ actor then said he is now speaking up to help other people with his story of depression and encourage them to get help.

Currently, David and Tamela are sharing their story of joy, inspiration, and comedy on The Overcomer Tour – A Mann’s Concert and Comedy Show.
