Spike Lee Confirms His Documentary About Colin Kaepernick Is Moving Forward: It’s His Story, Not False Narratives
Spike Lee is moving forward with the Colin Kaepernick documentary.
According to Vibe, the Oscar-winning director discussed the film while at the 2nd Annual Academy Museum Gala on Saturday (Oct. 15). He teased that it will probably be published before Colin Kaepernick returns to the field.
Spike Lee said,
“It’s his story, not the false narratives. . . Six years the National Football League has stopped him from playing, [but] he still gets up at 4 or 4:30 every morning to train, five to six days a week. So when that next phone call comes, he’ll be ready. He’ll be ready.”
The untitled project will be a multi-episode series as part of The Walt Disney Company’s overall first-look deal with Colin Kaepernick’s production arm Ra Vision Media.
theJasmineBRAND previously reported that Kaepernick and Spike Lee are working closely together on the documentary to help tell the athlete’s story from his own point of view. It will consist of in-depth interviews and a sizable, never-before-seen archive.
Kaepernick, a free-agent quarterback and civil rights activist, spent six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League before opting out of his contract in 2017. The move came after he was informed he was going to be released, a decision that’s been widely reported to be sparked by his decision to kneel for the National Anthem at games.
Kaepernick previously said,
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Still, he has never provided a comprehensive, first-person account of his journey prior to the upcoming documentary.
ESPN Films will serve as executive producer, and 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks will handle production.
