La La Anthony Says Her Ex Carmelo’s Trade To The Knicks Heavily Played Into Their Relationship Troubles: When We Lived In New York, That Was The Start Of The Demise Of The Marriage
La La Anthony shared the tea behind why her marriage with Carmelo Anthony fell apart.
During a recent interview, La La Anthony said her marriage went down the drain after Carmelo Anthony was traded from the Nuggets to the Knicks back in 2011. As previously reported, La La and Carmelo Anthony married on July 10, 2010. Prior to tying the knot, the former couple welcomed their son, Kiyan Anthony, into the world on March 7, 2007. However, after an extended separation period, La La Anthony, born Alani Nicole Vázquez, officially filed for divorce last June.
While chatting about where their seemingly perfect relationship went left, she shared,
“When we lived here [in New York] under all of that [attention], that’s when things became complicated. I think that was kind of the start, now that I look back, that was kind of the start of the demise of the marriage.”
La La explained:
“It is the hardest with the scrutiny and the media and the press, just everything. It is really hard. That’s not the only reason things didn’t work out, but things got tough with New York… just constantly being under the spotlight and people watching every little thing.”
The Brooklyn native reminisced on having “sleepless nights” during her marriage with Carmelo when the NBA star would travel to different cities:
“I never slept. It’s so funny, I used to think certain cities, like oh, ‘those are the problem cities.’ Miami, I’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m definitely not sleeping tonight or I’m going to figure out a way to get there.’”
La La admitted:
“But here’s what I found out, dear. Be careful with these other cities that you think don’t have as much going on, because those are the ones guys where the s–t is going down.”
The “Think Like A Man” actress continued:
“I’m just talking about what I went through… My best friend is married to an athlete, Ciara and Russell [Wilson] and they have an incredible bond, something I’ve never seen before.”
She elaborated:
“I’m so happy to even witness it because it makes me feel like, ‘Oh wow, that type of love really does exist,’ because I didn’t think it did for a long time. So it’s not across the board, so I can only speak to my experience.”
Earlier on in the episode, La La, who is currently single, shared how she is the woman who her friends always turn to for relationship advice:
“My marriage didn’t even succeed. I don’t know how I’m the relationship expert… Maybe they’re like, ‘I don’ know, her sh*t is f*ck*d up so bad, we want to make sure that doesn’t happen to us.’”
When asked what are things you should avoid in a relationship, La La joked:
“Don’t be with an athlete. Just kidding guys.”
