Elon Musk Says Twitter ‘Needs To Pay The Bills Somehow’ While Addressing Claims The Platform Plans To Charge For Verified Accounts: It Is The Only Way To Defeat The Bots
If you have a checkmark on Twitter you may soon be expected to hand over some coins to keep your verification.
According to reports, Elon Musk – who recently acquired Twitter – plans to charge verified users $20 a month in order to keep the official checkmark by their name. As you may already know, as of now, verifications are currently free of charge across social platforms.
On Monday (Oct. 31) bestselling author Stephen King shared that if Twitter does take the next steps to implement a fee for the famed symbol then he’s leaving the platform. The “It” writer said,
“$20 a month to keep my blue check? F*ck that, they should pay me. If that gets instituted, I’m gone like Enron.”
It didn’t take long for business mogul Elon Musk to respond to King. Musk tweeted,
“We need to pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?”
He added,
“will explain the rationale in longer form before this is implemented. It is the only way to defeat the bots & trolls.”
This isn’t the only major change that hit the popular app following Elon Musk’s takeover. As previously reported, the use of the n-word on the social media site has jumped almost 500% since Musk has been in charge. Lebron James, among other celebrities, has spoken out urging Musk to take the matter “very seriously.”
The professional athlete said,
“I don’t’ know Elon Musk and, tbh, I could care less who owns twitter. But I will say that if this is true, I hope he and his people take this very seriously because this is scary AF. So many damn unfit people saying hate speech is free speech.”
