Kenya Barris — Twitter Users React To Teaser For Filmmaker’s Latest Project ‘You People’: It’s Sad To See How Hollywood Is Erasing Black People With Biracial Actors
Kenya Barris is releasing yet another television project that features a biracial couple, and social media users are not here for it.
The Mixed-ish creator made his film directing debut with the upcoming romantic comedy You People, which he co-wrote with Jonah Hill. The film follows an interracial couple — Ezra Cohen and Amira Mohammed — who are played by Jonah Hill and Lauren London, respectively, as they navigate the treacherous bridge that connects love and family.
Opposites may attract but some families don’t.

Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Nia Long also make up the major cast.
In addition to the main cast, La La Anthony, Sam Jay, Mike Epps, Travis Bennett, Andrea Savage, Rhea Perlman, Deon Cole, Elliott Gould, Mike Epps, and Molly Gordon appear in the film.
Despite the film’s all-star cast, Twitter users are seemingly fed up with the perceived narrative that Kenya Barris is pushing.
One Twitter user said,
“1. Why is Nia Long name not in the tweet 2. Lauren is too old to play Nia daughter 3. Lauren is biracial why is she playing the daughter of Eddie & Nia 4. Kenya Barris really need to move pass this obsession with biracials I’ll skip this offering.”
Another user added,
“i hope kenya barris eventually heals from whatever happened to him that has him feeling the need to make every project he does defend interracial relationships and being biracial. cause at this point i’m starting to think his ancestors were THE loving v. virginia”

According to another Twitter user,
“It’s sad to see how Hollywood is erasing black people with biracial actors & the few people who call it out on here y’all minimize it to “they’re just hating”. Kenya Barris is contributing to eraser by consistently casting biracial ppl as full black & it should be a conversation.”
Someone else added,
“Kenya Barris needs to be stopped because his obsession with interracial relationships is weird. We already got Guess Who, which came out in 2005. He could have written/directed a better movie for Nia Long and Eddie Murphy to star in because this ain’t it.”

While social media users are not lending their support to Kenya Barris‘ latest project, the cast apparently had a great time working on it. Lauren London shared,
“These collaborators are masters at their craft. You have Eddie Murphy and Julia and Nia Long and David Duchovny and Jonah Hill — and Kenya as the captain of the ship. Everyone brought in their specialness and their art.”

Some Twitter users did point out that Barris writes his projects based on his own experiences in an interracial relationship.
As previously reported, the Black-ish creator and his soon-to-be ex-wife Rania “Rainbow Edwards Barris have been married since 1999 and share six children: Brooklyn, Kass, Beau, Lola, Leyah, and Kaleigh.

You People will make its Netflix debut on January 27.
