Lizzo Says ‘Cancel Culture Is Appropriation’: It’s Become Trendy, Misused & Misdirected
Lizzo is the latest celeb to slam cancel culture, but she’s offering a new take as to why we should be against the “trendy” call-out movement.
Over the years we’ve seen countless celebrities, influencers, and everyday working people fight for forgiveness as they battle it out against cancel culture. For those who may be unaware, cancel culture is a modern-day phrase used to refer to a form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles due to their actions that most have deemed to be problematic or controversial. Most recently, celebrities such as Will Smith, Kyrie Irving, and Skip Bayless seemingly learned firsthand how crazy cancel culture can be at times.
Even though some may feel that individuals being blasted for their questionable actions by the masses is a good thing, not everyone is here for the call-out movement. On Jan. 8, Lizzo took to Twitter and shared,
“This may be a random time to say this but it’s on my heart.. cancel culture is appropriation.:
She continued,
“There was real outrage from truly marginalized people and now it’s become trendy, misused and misdirected. I hope we can phase out of this & focus our outrage on the real problems.”

It’s unclear what prompted Lizzo to share her take on cancel culture but she isn’t the only famous person who has slammed the movement. As previously reported, In November Kevin Hart shared how cancel culture has changed the world of comedy. He said,
“Let’s be honest, I think there was a lot of changes that were needed and necessary, right? And I think being aware is something we should all prioritize. Just being aware. We’re learning to better understand each other, and in doing so, respect should be attached to that.”
He added,
“Now, there is a heightened level of sensitivity. There is a heightened level of opinion in today’s time because social media has presented the world with a bunch of platforms so people can express themselves and how they feel. So now the things we didn’t hear on a regular basis you are hearing. The conversations you may not have been aware of, well, you are hearing because they’re all happening in real time.”
Many Twitter users weighed in on what Lizzo said.
