Update: Tory Lanez Heading Back To Court For ‘Substitution Of Attorney’ Hearing After Firing His Lawyer To Bring On Suge Knight’s Former Attorney For Representation

Update: (Jan. 9, 2023): More details surrounding Tory Lanez’s new attorney and next court date have surfaced.

According to Rolling Stone reporter Nancy Dillon, Lanez’s upcoming court hearing, scheduled for Jan. 10, will be for “substitution of attorney.” She also shared that there is no bad blood between the “Say It” singer and his former lawyer George Mgdesyan, noting the reason for the switch of representation is because Mgdesyan doesn’t handle appeals.

She added,

Original story: (Jan. 9, 2023): R&B crooner Tory Lanez has reassessed his legal team.

Following a controversial trial that resulted in a guilty verdict, Tory Lanez has brought on a new representative to help defend his case.

As previously reported, last month, Tory Lanez was found accountable for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. According to Megan Thee Stallion, during the summer of 2020, the 30-year-old singer shot her as she walked away from a vehicle they were in. Due to the injury, she received immediate medical attention and had to undergo surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet.

On December 23, 2022, a jury found Lanez guilty of all three felony charges he faced: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, vehicle possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

On Sunday (Jan. 9), crime-based reporter Meghann Cuniff revealed that Lanez would be heading back to court on Tuesday (Jan. 10), and this time… Suge Knight’s former attorney, David Kenner, would be next to him.

With an official law document attached, Meghann Cuniff wrote from her Twitter account:

“Attorney David Kenner confirmed to me last week he’s now representing Tory [Lanez].”

She continued by questioning David Kenner’s time of entry into the case, stating her belief that the switch should’ve been made before trial.

“[David] Kenner is a longtime criminal defense attorney whose clients include former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight. Anyone with actual experience in criminal law (not all lawyers) will tell you he’s joining the case a bit late: Before trial would have been better.”

If you didn’t know, in 2018, Suge Knight was sentenced to 28 years in prison after catching a voluntary manslaughter charge for fatally hitting businessman Terry Carter with a pickup truck in 2015. He won’t be eligible for parole until 2034.

Currently, there aren’t any solid details surrounding Lanez’s forthcoming court appearance. However, Meghann Cuniff’s professional assumptions are leaning more toward his team’s attempt to get Lanez’s felonies reduced to misdemeanors, which she (seemingly) thinks is too soon to do so.

She tweeted,

“Some clues about what’s going on: Prosecutors tried to add a bribery count to Tory’s charges during trial, which the judge rejected. Any post-conviction motion from David Kenner regarding false evidence or witness testimony is very unlikely to come this quick.”

Cuniff continued:

“To be clear: We really have no idea what this is, and there is no way any serious post-conviction motion would be filed and heard this quick. Tory was convicted on Dec. 23 and there was a huge holiday break. There is no way there’s been a serious motion fully briefed.”

She added,

“Everything we’re discussing here is standard and expected post-conviction litigation – asking judge to reduce to misdemeanors, requesting new trial based on perceived issues with evidence/witnesses – but David Kenner only recently got on the case. Give it time.”

Lanez’s former lawyer was George Mgdesyan, who specializes in personal injury and criminal defense. No word on why their business relationship has come to an end.
