Brittney Griner Retuning To The WNBA After Signing 1-Year Deal w/The Phoenix Mercury

The basketball world will soon see the return of BG!

According to recent reports, WNBA star Brittney Griner is set to return to the league after signing a six-figure deal with the Phoenix Mercury. News of the 32-year-old’s return comes months after the hooper was released from a 10-month stay in a Russian prison.

Reportedly, Griner had already clarified her intention to come back to the WNBA after previously stating she was uncertain. In an instagram message posted after she returned home, Griner wrote:

“I also want to make one thing very clear: I intend to play basketball for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury this season, and in doing so, I look forward to being able to say ‘thank you’ to those of you who advocated, wrote, and posted for me in person soon.”

The report states that the deal is a 12 month contract worth $165,100. It’s noted that the structure of the agreement was created to leave room for team trades and secure better players to suit up with Griner. The decorated athlete is no stranger to winning. Griner, who was traded 1st overall by the Phoenix Mercury in 2013, led them to a championship the following year. Griner has also achieved 8 WNBA All-Star titles, 2 Scoring Champion titles, and has participated in 4 different Olympic Games.

Things came to screeching halt for Griner, however, after she was arrested while playing Russian back in March of 2022. After authorities found a vape cartridge with hash oil in the hooper’s belongings, Griner was sentenced to 9 years in prison. The Mercury all star was released, however, in a 1-for-1 prison swap between US President Joe Biden and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
