Erykah Badu Says She Never Expected To Have Children w/ 3 Different Men: ‘Who Plans That?’
Songstress Erykah Badu is being fully transparent about her motherhood journey.
While visiting the Breakfast Club recently, the 51-year-old shared that while she never planned on having “three baby daddies,” life moves forward, and women shouldn’t be labeled because of it.
After host Charlamagne The God asked about evading labels as a mother of children with different fathers, Badu stated:
“We shouldn’t do that…I didn’t know anything….No one would expect to have three baby daddies, who plans that?”
She continued:
“But when those things start to happen, you don’t stop living. You continue to grow and live and learn and make the best out of those situations…Who would want to [have three baby’s fathers] in this judgemental society?”
To date, Badu shares children with men from three of her high-profile relationships. Her eldest, Seven Sirius Benjamin, 26, is shared with the famous lead singer of the R&B band Outkast, André 3000. The musical couple began dating in 1995 but eventually split in ’99 a couple of years after Seven’s birth.
Badu’s second child, Puma Sabti Curry, 18, is shared with West Coast rapper The D.O.C. Real name Tracy Curry, D.O.C. and Badu dated after the singer’s split from Common in 2002, and welcomed daughter Puma shortly after. The couple only remained together for a year before splitting. Puma is arguably Badu’s most famous child, often appearing in videos stretching her vocal cords just like her mom. Earlier this year, the mother-daughter duo caught some backlash over a seemingly seductive photo they posed for together.
In 2009, Badu welcomed another daughter named Mars Merkaba Thedford, 14, who she shares with ex Jay Electronica. The New Orleans native, real name Elpadaro F. Electronica Allah, reportedly had a lengthy relationship with Badu that spanned from 2004 – 2009.
Despite her family, Badu shared elsewhere in the interview that while marriage is the next step for some after children, that narrative doesn’t apply to her or many others. Instead, the singer said she believes some people are meant to fall in love and stick around just long enough to have children.
