Michelle Obama Says She Sobbed ‘Uncontrollably’ After Trump’s Inauguration: ‘I Cried For 30 Minutes Straight’
Michelle Obama was vulnerable during her final moments in the White House.
According to the former First Lady, she uncontrollably cried during her final time boarding Air Force One on Jan. 20, 2017.
On Monday (Mar. 6) Michelle Obama was candid about her experience the day former president Donald Trump, 76, was sworn into office on “Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast.”

The 59-year-old said:
“When those doors shut, I cried for 30 minutes. Straight, uncontrollable sobbing, because that’s how much we were holding it together for eight years.”
Michelle Obama also detailed what it was like being present at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony. As you may know, her husband Barack Obama served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. The 61-year-old was the first African American president of the country. She shared:
“There were tears, there was that emotion. But then to sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display — there was no diversity, there was no color on that stage.”
The mother of two continued:
“There was no reflection of the broader sense of America.”

She added:
“And many people took pictures of me and they’re like, ‘You weren’t in a good mood?’ No, I was not! But you had to hold it together, like you do for eight years.”
In July 2019, media mogul Gayle King sat down with Michelle as she shared that attending Donald Trump’s inauguration as one of the few Black people present was “a lot, emotionally.” In prior interviews, the author has touched on the difficulties of being a Black woman in the White House. As previously reported, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Michelle admitted she believed Americans “weren’t ready” for her natural hair as they were seemingly “getting adjusted” to experiencing their first Black family in the White House. She shared:
“The code of ethics at a workplace, as black women we deal with it, the whole thing about, ‘Do you show up with your natural hair?’”
The Chicago native continued:
“I would get my staff all worried, too. I was like, ‘I was thinking about getting braids.’”
She added:
“That’s the African American experience… but women in offices that are worried, ‘Should I wear skirts? Should I wear pantyhose?’ I hate pantyhose.”
She admitted:
“But when you’re carrying all this other stuff, this mask, these differences and you’re trying to do your job, it’s just an extra burden on overcoming.”
