Tyrese Says Psych Meds Altered His Behavior & Led To Crying Moment That Made Him Viral Sensation: ‘That Sh*t Was Definitely A Confidence Killer’
Tyrese Gibson became a viral sensation when he posted videos of himself crying to social media — and he didn’t even know until months later.
During an appearance on The Morning Hustle podcast, the musician and actor sparked an important conversation about mental health when he explained how that incident came about and why he was so slow to learn about his newfound stardom: He was being overcome by his psychiatric medications.
Tyrese Gibson shared,
“I was on psych meds, which is called rexulti, never knew that the crying video was on the internet, never knew that I was a meme, never knew that any of that sh*t was going on until three months later when the psych meds were finally out of my system.”
In response to Tyrese Gibson, podcast host Lore’l said that she found it interesting that despite the fact that mental health is a topic that is frequently discussed, particularly in the Black community, people laughed and made jokes when he disclosed what he was going through.
Tyrese was seemingly a good sport about it all. He replied,
“I would’ve made a joke out of it too. That was the hottest sh*t, which I didn’t know, but that was the hottest sh*t period. I’m thinking to myself, ‘Sh*t, if all of this happened after the lowest point of my life, maybe I need to do a what more do you want from me part two.'”
Still, Tyrese shared that becoming a laughing stock across social media was a “confidence killer” for him, especially as someone who tries to carry themselves in the highest regard. He added,
“It wasn’t just the general public meaning the fans, I had to walk in some rooms and go to some awards shows and be in the presence of some people. I’m like, walking in a room, knowing that everybody’s seen the video. Man, that sh*t was definitely a confidence killer.”
As previously reported, Tyrese posted an emotional video of himself in 2017, explaining just how desperately he missed his then 10-year-old daughter, Shayla. While pointing to a shirt referencing his daughter, the Fast & Furious star cried as he said,
“This is all I got. Don’t take my baby. I’ve been away from my baby for two months.”
In between sobs, he continued,
“I just want my baby and no one’s listening because no one is in the court room. I’m not doing anything illegal. I’m not doing anything illegal, but I don’t want nobody…Oh, my God am I doing something illegal?”
Tyrese’s emotional plea came days after he was hospitalized. He shared with fans at the time that he was suffering from anxiety and dehydration following a lengthy court appearance amid a legal battle with his ex wife, Norma Gibson, over their daughter.
