A lot of people missed the opportunity to attend Freaknik in person, but at least they’ll be able to see it on television.
Hulu has unveiled Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told, an original documentary tracing the rise to fame and fall of the infamous Atlanta event.
The premise of the project states that it “recounts the rise and fall of a small Atlanta HBCU picnic that exploded into an influential street party and spotlighted ATL as a major cultural stage,” posing the question,
“Can the magic of Freaknik be brought back 40 years later?”
Freaknik began in the mid-1980s as a picnic for students at nearby historically black colleges and universities who couldn’t make it home for spring break.
As it continued into the ’90s, it grew past its modest origins into what it is renowned for today, a massive function that included dance competitions, concerts, parties, sporting activities, rap sessions and job fairs.

Regardless of its legacy, the fun eventually came to end out of concern for people’s safety.
The Associated Press reported in 1998 that Atlanta Committee for Black College Spring Break should cease hosting Freaknik due to reasons including
“sexual assaults [and] violence against women.”
At the time, committee chairman George Hawthorne said,
“We cannot support events that bring lewd activities, sexual assaults, violence against women and public safety concerns – firetrucks not being able to reach victims, and ambulances not being able to reach hospitals in a timely manner.”
However, the nostalgia is still apparent in numerous modern attempts to revive the ecstatic occasion, from celebrities throwing Freaknik-themed birthday parties to festivals and open gatherings.
Jermaine Dupri is among the executive producers for the Hulu documentary, which began filming at the end of 2022.
