Update: Jennifer Lopez Clarifies That She Does ‘Drink To Be Social’ As She Addresses Criticism Surrounding Her New Cocktail Brand For Previously Advocating For Sobriety
Update: (Jul. 5, 2023): Jennifer Lopez has finally addressed the criticism surrounding her new alcohol brand Delola.
As previously reported, a few months ago the “Marry Me” actress faced a lot of backlash behind her latest project. Critics questioned why she would start a cocktail brand when she’s been open in the past about upholding a sober lifestyle. Initially, Lopez didn’t acknowledge what the naysayers had to say but she recently took the time to set the record straight.
On July 4th Lopez shared a video to Instagram that displayed her in a vehicle on the way to a liquor store to purchase bottles of Delola for friends and loved ones.
During the drive, she explained that over the years her viewpoint on drinking has changed. She said,
“I know that a lot of people have been talking about, ‘Oh she doesn’t even drink, what’s she doing with a cocktail line?’ To tell you the truth, that was true for a long time – I didn’t drink.”
She continued,
“A few years back, as you will see from several photos of me out over the past 10 maybe 15 years, I have been having the occasional cocktail. I do enjoy the occasional cocktail.”
She added,
“I do drink responsibly. I don’t drink to get sh*t-faced. I drink to be social and have a good time and just kind of relax and let loose a bit, but always responsibly,”

Despite her explanation, the video has received mixed reactions.

After famed entertainer Jennifer Lopez announced the launch of her new alcohol brand Delola earlier this week, she was met with a flood of disapproving comments from social media users.

Many discussed in the the singer’s distant relationship with alcohol in recent years. Some noted that Jennifer Lopez and her hubby Ben Affleck have been proud proponents of sobriety, with the Air star being very public about his battle with alcoholism.
One user wrote:
“This is super disappointing considering she doesn’t drink and is married to a recovering alcoholic. How about we support small business instead of celebrities slapping their name on whatever that want to make more money.”

With a slew of similar statements following behind.

As a caption to her Instagram post announcing the drink, Jennifer Lopez invited followers to “live Delolalife together”, writing:
“The secret is out!!! I’m proud to share with you @DELOLA … my new collection of unique, mixology-level ready to enjoy spritzes. More is #OnTheJLo. Let’s live the #DelolaLife together”

In a promotional interview, the “Maid In Manhattan” star reportedly shared that the drink line has been in the works for the past two years, and that her husband was a major inspiration while developing the product. She stated:
“I’m a Leo. On the actual bottle, I put two lions — Ben and I are both Leos — like a male and a female lion…It’s very personalized, really authentic to me and what I love.”

Additionally, J. Lo discussed wanting to create a better tasting drink with better ingredients that represented her fun lifestyle. She added:
“So the way we came up with the name for Delola was really about being the carefree, fun side of who I am…I love to entertain. I love throwing parties at my house. I’m always the first one on the dance floor at all of the industry events and at times, on vacation, dancing on the table. That is kind of who Lola is.”
Reportedly, Delola Spritz is the first of the products release and includes three original cocktails – Bella Berry Spritz, Paloma Rosa Spritz and L’Orange Spritz.
