Dwayne Johnson Makes ‘Historic’ Seven-Figure Donation To Help Striking Actors Amid Their Battle w/ Hollywood
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has made a generous contribution to help fellow actors with financial assistance amid their current strike in Hollywood.
According to reports, famed actor Dwayne Johnson, 51, made a “historic” donation to the SAG-AFTRA (The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Fund. While the exact amount gifted by the “Black Adam” star hasn’t been disclosed, it’s reported that the total was in the seven-figure range.
In addition to that, Dwayne Johnson’s donation was reportedly the largest single donation the union has ever received from one individual at one time.
The actor’s pledge comes after the foundation’s president Courtney B. Vance and its executive director Cyd Wilson sent a letter to 2,700 of the union’s highest-earning actors in the film industry. Reports state the letter included the amount the non-profit is aiming to raise for many of its members who will face financial hardships due to the ongoing strike on major Hollywood productions.
Courtney B. Vance, 63, expressed his gratitude for Johnson’s donation and said,
“It was a love fest. It’s like, ‘Man, you’re stepping up in a way that is allowing others to know the dire necessity of it. This is him saying, ‘In such a time as this, I’m here and I’m not going anywhere, whatever you need me to do.’ And that sends a huge message to other folks to do the same thing.”
Reportedly, Screen Actors Guild Members can receive up to $6,000 in emergency financial assistance. Cyd Wilson said out of the organization’s 160,000 members, between 7,000-10,000 members will need these services during the strike.
Courtney B. Vance went on,
“It is a call to arms for all of us to know that we just have to step up however you can. If your step up is $10, step up. Because that $10 is going to help somebody. If it’s $10,000, if it’s $10 million, step up, because we have to.”
Vance continued and shared the importance of the members standing up for themselves.
“Everyone knows what happens when you go on strike, when you stand for something — as the saying goes, if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for everything. You can’t stand unless you have support underneath you, on the side, up top and up front. So Dwayne is letting everyone know, ‘I’m here. What are you going to do?’”
He added of Johnson’s contribution,
“On behalf of the thousands who will be helped by his historic donation, thank you, thank you, thank you.”
As previously reported, most productions have halted filming after Hollywood actors went on strike earlier this month due to not being able to reach a mutual deal in their contractual agreement(s) with AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers). As you may already know, screenwriters have been on strike since May. This is the first time since 1960 that both actors and writers have walked out together.
According to reports, SAG-AFTRA and WGA (Writers Guild of America) are both seeking increases in pay and residuals from streaming content. Both parties also want protection from their work being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), higher caps on pensions, and health benefits.
