Erica Mena Fired From “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” After Calling Spice A “Monkey” + Social Media Users React To Mona Scott Young Seemingly Stating She “Handled” The Situation: ‘It’s Giving Publicity Stunt’
“Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” had social media in a frenzy over the weekend!
Fans of the series shared their thoughts after an explosive argument between Erica Mena and Spice led to Mena’s immediate firing from the show.
The drama reached a boiling point during the series episode titled “Mena-ce to Society” which aired August 29th. During a sit down, cast mates Erica Mena, 35, and dance hall artist Spice, 41, seemingly came together to hash out prior issues they had with each other. Fellow reality star Shekinah Anderson was also present to mediate for the two. However, things went completely left when it became clear the women could not see eye to eye about the situation.
As the conversation grew more heated, Mena flipped the table over and seemingly launched at the Jamaican musician. The pair hurled several derogatory statements at one another, with Spice yelling that Mena’s children “hate” her and the actress returning harsh words using a racial slur. After she was escorted out of the venue, the “Stepmom” star referred to Spice several times as a “monkey” and “blue monkey”, which seems to have been the breaking point for social media users.

Reacting to the shocking moment, one internet user wrote:
“This Isn’t Colorism. This Is Racism
Erica Mena isn’t Black. Colorism is exercised within the same ethnic group/race. Calling Spice a “monkey” is pure, cut & dry textbook RACISM
I implore the confused to get off of social media and open a book/dictionary”
While another added:
“#ericamena #spiceoriginal It is extremely sad and disturbing that some blk women in particular are cosigning or justifying what Erica Mena said to Spice. Even if Spice talked about her kid, which she didn’t, doesn’t give someone the right to use a racial slur.”
Many other users shared the same opinions. It wasn’t long before the official page for the MTV series announced that Mena had been fired and would not appear on the upcoming season. In a message posted across their social media platforms they wrote:
“The Love & Hip Hip Hop franchise has never shied away from hard conversations in our community. Working hand-in-hand with our partners, viewers will see the impact of Erica Mena’s remarks play out in the final three episodes of the season. Effectively immediately, she will not appear on the next season of Love & Hip Hip Hop: Atlanta.”
Shortly after the announcement, L&HH creator Mona Scott Young took to social media, seemingly to address the situation as well. In a one word post that has the comments section disabled, the entertainment guru wrote:
“Handled”
The post seems to have triggered many online to speculate that Mena was only fired to save face. Fellow “L&HH” star Scrappy also alluded to as much before retracting his statement. Originally, the rapper claimed it was a “Bozo” move to fire Mena as they set her up for the argument to go down. However after watching the clip, the musician stated that while he doesn’t wish unemployment on anyone, he understands why the decision was made.

As far as the rest of the internet, social media users slammed the show for even allowing the episode to air. Noting the producers obviously knew the situation happened months before the public saw the altercation, one user wrote:
“The question should be, why did y’all decide to air it? Y’all knew it would get backlash, which would result in more promo for the show.. Y’all filmed it MONTHS ago, did green screens about it and etc. So firing her after she did the “work” that y’all allowed is wild! But anyway, good riddance..”
While another added:
“So did they not know before aired or?? it’s giving publicity stunt”
Others continued to chime in, with many of them being very similar and critical of Mona and the “L&HH” team.
At this time neither the show producers nor Mona has offered any clarity on why the episode was allowed to air. Mena has not publicly addressed the fight nor her firing at this time.
