Lauryn Hill Says ‘Y’all Lucky I Make It On This Stage Every Night’ Amid Criticism That Her Concerts Always Start Late + Sheds Tears While Expressing Her Gratitude At Being Able To Tour Despite Only Having 1 Album

Singer/song writer Lauryn Hill did not shy away from once again addressing internet grumbles about her shows starting late.

The 8x Grammy Award winner made it clear that it’s only because of God and her community that she’s able to perform at all, suggesting she’s unconcerned about the tardiness.

During one of her recent tour stops, Lauryn Hill mimicked people stating “oh, she’s late tonight”, adding:

“Yo, y’all lucky I make it on this stage every night…I don’t do it because they let me do it, I do it because I stand here in the name of God!”

Continuing the songstress was overcome with emotions while sharing her gratitude at even being able to continue doing shows though she only has one album, adding:

“God is the one who allows me to do it. Who surrounded me with family and community when there was no support when the album sold so many records; and nobody showed up and said ‘hey would you like to make another one’…so I went around the world and I played the same album over and over and over and over again…we’re not just the survivors, we’re the thrivers”

Fans have been critical about Lauryn Hill being late to her shows for quite some time now. Back in 2021, the “Ready or Not” singer also addressed the issue in her music. During a feature on the song “Nobody” from NAS’ album King’s Diseases II, the musician rapped:

“Now let me give it to you balanced and with clarity. I don’t need to turn myself into a parody. I don’t–I don’t do the sh*t you do for popularity. They clearly didn’t understand when I said “I Get Out” apparently. My awareness like Keanu in The Matrix. I’m savin’ souls and y’all complainin’ ’bout my lateness. Now it’s illegal for someone to walk in greatness.”

Many reacted to the single at the time with mixed opinions. Some praised Hill for standing firm in the face of a critique some feels is meaningless. Others felt the lyric was disrespectful, arguing the artist should be more considerate of people’s time. In terms of social media responses, it seems many still feel the same way judging by the comments to her recent statement.
