Update: Boosie Badazz Doubles Down On ‘The Color Purple’ Criticism After Facing Backlash For Claiming He Walked Out Of Film Screening w/ His Daughters Over ‘Rainbow Love Story’: ‘We Have Rights As Parents To Protect Our Children As Much As We Can’

Update: (Jan. 3, 2024): Rapper Boosie Badazz heard your criticism but he isn’t backing down from his point of view.

Yesterday (Jan. 2) Boosie took to X and revealed he walked out of a screening of the new film adaptation of “The Color Purple” musical because he didn’t agree with the writers’ allegedly “pushing” a pro-LGBTQIA+ narrative. In part, he wrote,

“I HAD TO WALK OUT THIS COLOR PURPLE MOVIE ( N TWO OTHER OLDER COUPLES WALKED OUT ALSO.) BECAUSE I HAD MY LITTLE GIRLS WITH ME N IT SEEMED LIKE A (rainbow emoji) LOVE STORY !!”

After facing backlash for his comments, Boosie responded, saying he has a right to protect his children.

“WHY IF SOMEONE DOESNT AGREE WITH THE [RAINBOW EMOJI] NARRATIVE THATS BEING PUSHED WHY DO YALL SAY THAT THE PERSON WHO DOESNT ARGREE IS [RAINBOW EMOJI]. THATS BULLYING ??WE HAVE A RIGHT AS PARENTS TO SAY ITS NOT COOL FOR A 7 N 9 YEAR OLD TO WATCH THIS.”

He continued,

“WE HAVE RIGHTS AS PARENTS TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN AS MUCH AS WE CAN .I HAVE NO PROBLEM AT ALL WITH [RAINBOW EMOJI] PEOPLE. MY GRANDAD WAS A PREACHER (SOUTHERN BAPTIST) N IM JUST TRYNA RAISE MY KIDS WITH THE SAME BELIEFS N RESPECT WE WAS RAISED WITH ITS JUST THIS WORLD WILL HAVE U N A FIGHT TO DO SO??”

Original Story: (Jan. 2, 2024): Rap star Boozie Badazz recently shared his polarizing thoughts about the new film adaptation of “The Color Purple” musical.

In a statement posted to his X account (formerly Twitter), the 41-year-old shared that he didn’t finish the movie and slammed its writers for allegedly “pushing” a pro-LGBTQIA+ narrative.

Boosie Badazz, real name Torence Ivy Hatch Jr., wrote after going to see the film:

“I HAD TO WALK OUT THIS COLOR PURPLE MOVIE ( N TWO OTHER OLDER COUPLES WALKED OUT ALSO.) BECAUSE I HAD MY LITTLE GIRLS WITH ME N IT SEEMED LIKE A (rainbow emoji) LOVE STORY !! GOOD ACTING BUT WHOEVER WROTE THE SCRIPT IS PUSHING THE NARRATIVE HARD !! AS A PARENT I WILL NOT LET MY LITTLE GIRL WATCH THIS FILM”

In case you’re unfamiliar, “The Color Purple” is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel written by author Alice Walker. Three years after the book debuted, it was adapted into a movie starring Danny GloverWhoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Adolph Ceasar, and Margaret Avery. The film version became a critically acclaimed cultural phenomenon, earning a total of 11 Oscar nominations. Then in 2005, the book was adapted into a Broadway musical, which the newest release is mostly mirrored after.

The plot of the story follows the life of a 20th-century Georgia girl named Celie Harris (played by Goldberg and more recently, Fantasia Barrino) who suffers horrific rape and abuse by her father, and later by the husband he married her off to. At a young age, she’s separated from her sister Nettie whom she shares a close bond, and is forced to endure years of violence as she becomes a woman. Celie’s life takes a dramatic turn after her husband brings home his long-time mistress/showgirl Shug Avery. The two develop deep feelings for one another, and Shug becomes instrumental in Celie’s growth of self-confidence.

Seemingly much to Boosie’s unawareness, Shug and Celie also share romantic moments throughout the story. In the 1985 film version, the characters engage in a kissing scene, which also seems to be a part of the new movie. As social media users reacted to Boosie’s comment, many brought this fact to his attention and placed the blame on him for not doing research before opting to go see the film. One user wrote:

“You should’ve read the book or do some kind of research before subjugating your children to material you may deem inappropriate.”

Others criticized Boosie for once again taking issue with pro-LGBTQ ideas, but not commenting on the other brutal parts of the story. Transgender reality star TS Madison seemingly reacted to Boosie’s comment, stating:

“So yall more upset that Mrs Celie and Shug Avery was exploring their sexuality but didn’t draw the line at her being molested at 14 by her stepfather and having his kids? This really shows me why yall still let that “Fresh” uncle come to the family reunion but throw your Gay kids on the street!”

Some even reminded the musician of his own lyrics, taunting him for previously rapping about having “two redbones kissing in the back seat.” While a few others seem to share his thoughts on the movie.

This isn’t the first time Boosie has made negative remarks about the LGBTQIA+ community. If you recall, he has very famously beefed with actress Gabrielle Union over her and her husband Dwyane Wade’s choice to support their teenage daughter Zaya Wade’s transition from male to female. The “Wipe Me Down” artist had been very vocal in criticizing their decision and has regularly expressed his frustrations about people supporting the marginalized community interacting with children as a whole.

It does not appear that Boosie has made any further comments about the subject at this time.
