Family Of Cinematographer Killed On ‘Rust’ Set ‘Satisfied’ w/Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s Guilty Manslaughter Conviction, But Wants Everyone Involved To Face ‘Legal Consequences’
The family of slain cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was fatally shot by movie star Alec Baldwin in 2021, is speaking out about the recent conviction in their relative’s murder.
After a jury found the movie’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty of manslaughter, the Huthchins shared they believe justice was served.
Reportedly, an attorney representing Halyna’s mother and sister released a statement after the verdict was handed down, stating:
“Halyna’s parents and her sister have always wanted everyone who is responsible for Halyna’s death to be held accountable. Today was the first trial and conviction in the criminal justice process.”
“We are satisfied that the jury, based on the evidence, found Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty beyond a reasonable doubt for her part in the taking of Halyna’s life. We look forward to the justice system continuing to make sure that everyone else who is responsible for Halyna’s death is required to face the legal consequences for their actions.”
The reading of Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s conviction occurred on Wednesday (March 7) in a New Mexico courthouse. During the two-week trial, the prosecution built up a strong case against the prop coordinator, bringing in several of the movie’s staff members such as the first assistant director, a producer, and a line producer to testify against her. Witness statements essentially supported the prosecution’s argument that Gutierrez-Reed was negligent with her job and that her carelessness allowed Baldwin to be equipped with a loaded weapon, inadvertently causing Halyna’s death.
Gutierrez-Reed’s attorneys unsuccessfully argued, however, that she was overworked and not responsible in any way for Halyna’s demise. Initially, Gutierrez-Reed was being tried on two charges – evidence tampering and involuntary manslaughter. However, a jury only convicted her of the latter. Since she was only hit with one guilty verdict, the film professional faces a potential 18 months behind bars and a $5,000 fine. Reports note that Gutierrez-Reed appeared detached but compliant as the court judge ordered her to be immediately reprimanded, though her family was notably distraught. Gutierrez-Reed’s request to be released until sentencing was denied by the court judge, despite her lawyer’s efforts,
A sentencing date for Gutierrez-Reed’s conviction has not yet been reported. As far as Baldwin goes, the Hollywood A-lister is set to appear for his own manslaughter trial later this year. This will be the second time the actor will face the charge, as the first round of manslaughter charges brought against him were ultimately dropped. He has continued to maintain his innocence.
