Shakira Reveals Her Sons Felt ‘Barbie’ Film Was ‘Emasculating,’ Says She Agrees ‘To A Certain Extent’
It’s been almost a year since its premiere, and the dialogue surrounding the “Barbie” film is still alive and well!
During a recent cover story, Colombian singer Shakira revealed that her two sons hated the popular “Barbie” movie. The “Hips Don’t Lie” artist couldn’t hold back her candid remarks when asked about her reaction to director Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy. The film centers around (Stereotypical) Barbie – portrayed by Margot Robbie – and her quest to save the ??matriarchal society of Barbieland from being changed to a patriarchal social system.
Speaking on how her 11 and 9-year-old sons felt about the film, Shakira expressed,
“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent.”
Shakira continued,
“I’m raising two boys. I want ‘em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”

Shakira
When the interviewer questioned,
“Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should?”
The 3x Grammy-Award-winner reportedly replied,
“Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?”
“Barbie” debuted domestically on July 21, 2023, and reportedly grossed $1.446 billion globally. Elsewhere during the interview, Shakira spoke more positively about women’s empowerment, saying,
“I think there’s something refreshing about women when they get to be themselves and be unapologetic. Because we’ve had to apologize so many damn times in the past.”
