Tina Knowles Reveals Daughter Solange Was Conceived On Nile River: ‘I Thought I Was Having A Boy & Wanted To Name Him Niles’
Beyoncé and Solange’s mom, Tina Knowles, had a time on the Nile.
The 70-year-old matriarch recently shared some intimate family stories on the podcast The Run-Through With Vogue. Among the revelations, she discussed the origins of her daughters’ names, including the unique story behind Solange.
Tina Knowles explained that Beyoncé’s name came from her maternal line, combining “Beyoncé” and “Beyincé.” However, Solange’s name has a very different background.
Tina Knowles remarked,
“I went to Paris when I was about 32 … Well, when I got pregnant with her. I bought a baby name book in Paris for my girlfriend, and she was going to have a baby, and then the next year I wound up having a baby, so I pulled that old book out.”
The book, written in French, featured the name Solange, which caught Ms. Tina’s attention.
She continued,
“But actually Solange was conceived on the Nile in Egypt, and I thought I was having a boy, and I wanted to name him Niles … but little did I know, here came this girl, and so yeah, that’s where I got her name.”

Solange, who has often spoken about her connection to Egypt, told the Evening Standard in 2017,
“I had some revelations, in terms of my parents finding out they conceived me in Egypt after visiting the Giza pyramids, and connecting to that and the constellation of Orion that aligns with Giza.”
Solange’s bond with Egypt is also evident as she has the Orion constellation tattooed on her right arm and named her 2017 tour, following the release of her album A Seat at the Table, Orion’s Rise.

This isn’t the only story of Tina Knowles and her family making headlines. On Thursday (May 28), Ms. Tina shared fond memories of her daughters in an interview with Vogue, which she posted on her Instagram. Reflecting on Beyoncé being bullied during childhood, Tina recalled,
“Beyoncé, she was very shy and she got bullied a bit but the day that she stood up for someone — she didn’t stand up for herself she stood up for them. I’m getting emotional talking about it. I was just, I couldn’t have been more proud of her.”

Ms. Tina accompanied the post with a heartfelt caption, stating,
“Each child is different! But all so special. I believe kids are born with their personalities. My three girls All handled things very differently. Learn their personalities and respect the individuality. Never compare the negatives , always praise the positive differences and pay attention to the things that you can brag on about them. They love it and it encourages positive behavior.”
